What the petition asks for
The petition is on the UK Parliament’s own petitions website. It asks that Monday 12th July 2027 becomes a one-off bank holiday in England, to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the birth of England, so that most people in England can celebrate the occasion.
It also asks that the Government financially supports the charities who are organising those celebrations.
Why 12th July 927 matters
The petition says most English historians recognise the meeting arranged by King Æthelstan on 12th July 927, at Eamotum in Cumbria, as the original unification of the English people. It says that after this date Æthelstan styled himself Rex Anglorum, King of the English, and that for the first time all the people of England lived under one ruler and one law code.
In its words, “The 12th July is to England as 4th July is to America.” It asks that England’s creation in 927 is officially recognised.
